Live event "freq-260530 deer revenge" (performer)

Recording Studio, Acoustic Research Center, Kyushu University Ohashi Campus

I performed as the opening act for a live performance by photographer HOMMA Takashi at freq-260530 deer revenge, an event organized by JO Kazuhiro of the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University.

In this performance, I combined field recordings captured in the Ambisonics format with improvisation on a grand piano. Ambisonics is a spatial audio technique that records and reproduces sound together with its directional and spatial information. The venue, a recording studio with eight speakers mounted on its walls, functions as a three-dimensional sound space, and I made use of this to reproduce the recorded sound environments spatially.

The grand piano was placed at the center of the room, with the audience seated around it. Field recordings were played back through the eight speakers surrounding them, so that listeners experienced the piece from within a space enveloped both by the recorded environmental sounds and by the piano played at its center.

The performance took place in complete darkness, allowing listeners to focus on the sounds themselves and on the expanse of the space without relying on visual information. By layering improvisation over the recorded environmental sounds, I sought to create an acoustic space in which sounds recorded in the past intersect with sounds emerging in the moment, and environmental sounds intersect with musical ones, inviting the audience to experience them not as separate elements but as a single soundscape.
